Trees planted in urban areas often don’t have the right
conditions to thrive: often over time the soil around
the tree ends up getting compacted by the traffic of
vehicles and people. This will cause stress to the root
system as the soil will be less permeable to water and
oxygen, both necessary for the tree to grow strong
and healthy.
The roots will react by growing upward, lifting and
cracking the paved surfaces above.
This situation is not ideal for the trees, causes damage
to walkways and road surfaces and can create a potential
a safety risks for pedestrians and cyclists.
Rootbox provides an excellent solution to both issues:
it provides plenty of space for the roots to develop in
a healthy way, while protecting the surface from root
intrusion, paving deformation or failure.
Rootbox is used to house the substrate and the roots
of trees growing alongside paved surfaces.
It has three main functions:
• Provide space for roots to grow freely, while avoiding
any intrusion in the paving. This is done quite
simply by leaving a gap between the substrate and
the roof of the system, so that the roots encounter air
as they rise, stopping any further upword growth.
• Contain pipes tha bring water and nutrients to the
tree.
• Act as stormwater attenuation tank and a slow-release
water resevoir for the tree, increaing the resiliance
of the area in case of heavy rainfall.
ELEVATOR ROOT
NEW ELEVETOR is used to create tree root protection in urban areas where very tight underground space and poor living conditions are a threat to the healthy growth of the tree. The rooting space is limited by, for example, cables, pipes, sewers and road foundations.
The system forms a r.c. slab resting on a matrix of pillars; the void created underneath the slab is filled with organic soil, and openings in the slab are left to for the trees to grow.
The traffic load is taken up by the concrete contruction and not by soil package in which the tree is rooted; a few cm of air are left above the organic soil to protect the concrete from root damage.
